Weight Belts for Belly Dancing?
I've recently come across something called Power Belly weight belts, and I was totally fascinated! Here's a promotional video for it:
Basically it involves wearing a 10-pound weight belt around the hips while you're dancing.
I can see the logic of why wearing a weighted hip belt would improve your hip movements - because your abs have to work harder to lift the extra weight. However, I'm always a little concerned that doing belly dance movements fast, like they do in Bellyrobics, could be a bad thing - so the thought of adding weights is frightening. Although belly dance is a relatively safe form of dance, it's still possible to injure your back and your knees if the moves are done incorrectly. Do hip movements quickly and you're more likely to stick your bottom out, which will injure your back - do twists at speed and you could twist your knees.
The introduction to this clip covers the pro's and con's in a sensible way:
I tend to agree that it's not something I would recommend for the "get fit by belly dancing" crowd, or for someone who's trying to learn from a DVD. It's more like a useful tool for the intermediate dancer who wants to build strength and improve technique quickly.
