Our Australian belly dance community is always being enriched by dancers from other countries, and Reshma Rose is a good example. Originally trained in London, she is now based in Perth, WA.
The language of belly dance may be universal, but there are subtle differences in approach in different parts of the world. I'm sure Perth belly dancers will appreciate the chance to explore Reshma Rose's perspective on the art form.
It's also great to see belly dance classes with creche facilities - great idea!

Interview with belly dancer Reshma Rose
How did you get started with belly dancing?
A friend suggested we try a class near my workplace - I tagged along and was quickly hooked! I was 24 years old, and had no idea that a person could turn professional without having been trained from a young age.
What is your favourite belly dancing style and/or prop?
I love silk veils - they fly so effortlessly and create sensual mystery. They are also extremely versatile and can be used in different ways for slow or upbeat tracks.
Who or what has had the greatest influence on your belly dance style?
Probably going to haflas and other belly dance stage shows - that is where you can really pick out who your favourite dancers are and be inspired to adjust your own unique dance style bit by bit.
What advice would you offer an aspiring belly dancer?
Join a troupe - there is no better experience than becoming a part of an active dance troupe. You learn so much from each other, you have so much fun, and if you have a good troupe leader, you can get loads of invaluable on-stage experience and get paid at the same time!! Troupe days were some of the most exciting days!
