Ouds
The oud is often referred to as the "king of instruments" in the Middle East. It's probably the grandfather of the modern-day guitar and although it's a traditional instrument, it has great versatility.
It's not cheap to buy an oud, unfortunately, as there is so much workmanship involved in creating that beautiful sound. Even on eBay, be suspicious of anything advertised for less than $300.
