It finally dawned on me to check the Wayback Machine and lo and behold, there was the magic carpet man himself!
And here he is - he was the mascot for BellydanceBazaar.com in the days when it was owned by someone else, and it was the centre of a Webring. Remember those? They've gone out of style now, but at one time they were very common.
A webring was a community of websites all on the same subject, forming a chain or ring of links to each other. In that way, visitors could navigate around the ring and discover lots of new sites on the subject, without ever having to visit the central site.
These days, there are very few webrings left. The big problem was that the ring was only as good as the links on it, and as websites came and went or changed names, most of them ended up full of links that went nowhere, breaking the chain.
