Habibi, you are my…what?
Leyla Lanty's Essential Arabic for Dancers has been out for a while, but I only just stumbled across it - and I'm so glad! Now we can all finally understand what we're dancing to!
Apparently this is a workshop that Leyla has been giving for some time, and the DVD is just a straight filming of that workshop - but it's no less valuable for that.
Leyla doesn't just cover the most common Arabic words used in belly dance songs, she also explains the gestures. I found that useful, although it would have been nice to see some sample dances to see how they're used.
There's too much information in this DVD to absorb all at one sitting. I wonder how people who attend the workshop manage, because I can see me taking two or three sessions to understand it all. I don't have the handout which is mentioned, I think that would be worth writing off for.
Excellent value and a must for any belly dancer who wants to gain a greater understanding of their craft.
